BI Manager

CAREER OPPORTUNITY
An exciting opportunity exists for a BI Manager to lead the existing team in which some team members focus on functions referred to as “MIS” and others focus on Business Intelligence (BI) functions. The MIS team creates and distributes about five thousand reports every month and attends to ad-hoc user queries. The BI team focuses mostly on project-type work including Power BI dashboards and Azure-based technology such as Fabric, related to Brolink’s system rewrite project.
Brolink is now looking for someone to manage the MIS and/ or the BI team. The manager’s role is to plan, coordinate and supervise activities of up to six staff members. This hybrid-work position is based in Centurion.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties and Responsibilities:
General responsibilities include the following:
•Perform common line management functions including leadership, motivation, prioritisation and allocation of tasks, cost management, maintenance of an appropriate organisational structure, staff development, retention, leave planning and approvals, performance management and dealing with general staff issues,
•Liaise with internal and external customers,
•Participate in planning changes to technology,
•Encourage innovation,
•Enforce standards, policies and processes, and ensure that audit findings are properly addressed,
•Promote a general awareness of information security and ensure overall adherence to information security standards,
•Keep current with trends in the IT industry as well as the short-term insurance industry, and stay up to date with compliance requirements,
•Resolve conflict as may arise from time to time in connection with roles, technical design, priorities etc.
•Execute strategic initiatives including technical upgrades, improved report distribution via a portal, process automation etc.
•Prepare monthly SLA reports and ensure overall compliance with service levels.
Responsibilities in relation to BI include the following:
•Participate in project planning of the system rewrite project,
•Lead technical innovation in BI,
•Drive implementation and support of suitable new technologies,
•Drive Brolink’s data governance initiative,
•Participate hands-on in BI development.
Responsibilities in relation to MIS include:
•Perform hands-on technical and operational work to write new reports, run existing reports, perform basic database administration and other housekeeping tasks,
•Ensure that the daily ETL process is performed on time,
•Ensure that reports meet business requirements,
•Ensure that reports are properly balanced compared to data from the transaction processing systems, that variances are properly investigated on a weekly and monthly basis (depending on report type) and that checks are done for reasonableness,

In conjunction with Brolink’s Finance department ensure that the information in reports matches cash balances and corresponding figures in the books of insurers (e.g. loss ratios, remittance amounts, claims),
•Provide supporting data to other teams.
Special working conditions (e.g., shift work, irregular hours, overtime, open plan office, travel):
•“On call” availability via phone and/ or WhatsApp,
•Open plan office when presence is required at the office

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
•A tertiary qualification (e.g., a bachelor degree) majoring in subjects related to information technology,
•Training in Microsoft SQL Server and BI-related technology (e.g., certification) as listed below under technical competencies.
Preferably, in addition to the above:
•Training in management,
•Post-graduate studies,
•Data science training,
•Certificates and/ or diplomas related to financial services and preferably short-term insurance,
•Training in statistics and/ or accounting.
Work Experience
Minimum Requirements:
•Proven track record leading team members (either in a formal management position or peer-to-peer),
•Five years working experience in BI and/ or IT,
•Two years hands-on working experience in BI,
•One year experience in the financial services industry.
Preferably, in addition to the above:
At least one year experience in:
•Power BI,
•Data science,
•Data governance,
•Cloud infrastructure,
•Microsoft Fabric,
•Hands-on involvement in a financial transaction processing system and/ or reporting system,
•Experience in short-term insurance.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
Minimum Requirements:
•Proven ability to work with databases and exposure to Business Intelligence tools, preferably Power BI,
•Demonstrable knowledge of software development life cycle models,
•Good knowledge of technology environments, including programming, hardware platforms, networks, telecommunications, and operations,
•Above-average knowledge of Excel,
•Strong appreciation of information security concepts.
Preferably, in addition to the above:
•Some programming experience, e.g., Python,
•Data governance knowledge,
•Azure cloud principles,
•Azure DevOps,
•Microsoft Fabric.
